These Fruits & Vegetables Beginning Sound Clip Cards are perfect to get learners identifying beginning sounds and strengthening their pre-reading skills.
While there are other important pre-reading skills that help create strong and confident readers, letter recognition and phonological awareness are at the top of the list.
Letter Recognition means just that! Being able to recognize and identify different letters.
Phonological Awareness means being able to hear that words are made up of smaller sounds. A child who has developed phonological awareness is able to identify the beginning and last sounds in words.
Reading is a skill that needs to be practiced consistently to get stronger over time. The best way to do this is to encourage a love of reading, through hands on learning.
Start with pre-reading activities and provide ample opportunities for engagement with fun and interesting themes or topics.
These free fruits and vegetables beginning sound clip cards are perfect for teaching and practicing both letter recognition and phonological awareness!
Here’s how to engage with this activity:
First, print and cut out all the cards. I recommend you print on cardstock or heavy paper and laminate each for added durability.
Say the name of the fruit or vegetable that appears on any one of the cards.
Have the learner tell you the beginning sound of the picture name.
Then identify the letter on the right side of the card that corresponds with the sound.
Use clothespins, or bingo dabbers to identify the letter.
And voila! A simple, fun, and colourful activity to strengthen your learners pre-reading skills!
