We all know just how important sight words are for building confident and successful readers. We also know that creating hands-on, fun, and engaging activities is important for retaining information. Here is a hands on activity that you can do with your learner today to encourage sight word recognition.

Back To School Sight Word Activity
This activity is low prep (materials and explanation), and provides you with ample opportunity to assess your learner’s knowledge of the sight word.
Simply print out the sight word pencil cases on cardstock, laminate for durability, and cut out.
Do the same for the pencils that will spell out the word
Both uppercase and lowercase letters have been provided for you, along with an extra set of vowels.
Of course if you wish to use these pencils for another activity, and need more letters, just print off more pages!
After you’ve prepared the activity… you’re good to go!
How should you use this sight word activity?
As teachers and educators, we should always try to make sure our activities are as engaging as possible! We want to make sure that our learners are using multiple senses, and using different skills to connect with the materials.
To engage with this sight word activity you can place the pencil cards in a sensory bin, and instruct your learner to find the pencils that spell the words.
As an extension, have your learner record their sight words on the recording sheet. This step will be dependent on the skills of your learner.
This activity will provide you learner with multiple ways of engaging with sight words. First they will see and identify the word on the cards. Then they will spell out the word with the pencils. As you learner is interacting with activity, be sure to have say the word on the card, and after they have recreated it using the pencils.
