Teaching math can be really fun! It’s really rewarding to see when a child recognizes that they are on the road to mastering a new math concept or skill! And one of the first skills they begin to grasp is the ability to compose numbers – addition!
Of course this is after they have developed a solid foundational sense of numbers!
Learners need extensive opportunities to practice and demonstrate their understanding through hands-on activities, and using concrete materials.
Composing Numbers
Children are able to move onto composing and decomposing numbers when they have a solid understanding of numbers. Learners who have a good sense of numbers and computation will be able to demonstrate and communicate that 6+1, and 5+2 makes 7.

Printable Back to School Addition Activity
This activity is most effective when used with manipulatives. When using manipulatives have you learner physically demonstrate how the number on the bag is composed. Remember, the more hands-on the activity, the more senses being used, the more knowledge retention!
Here’s how to engage with this activity:
Print all pages, laminate for durability, and cut out.
You know your learner best, so the amount of equation cards you use per number will be dependent on their knowledge and skill level. Be sure to provide challenges, but ones that they can achieve. Do not overwhelm your learner by providing too many equations to work with.
Instruct your learner to fill the school bag with supplies that have an equation which equals the sum of the number on the bag.
If your learner is ready for the next level, or you are working on printing and fine motor skills, instruct them to record the equations on the recording sheet.
Depending on your learner’s ability, this step is not required. But it will give your leaner yet another way to interact with the activity, and concepts.
Three versions of the recording sheet has been provided for you.
Version 1 – half sheets for learners who are working on one or two numbers at a time. You can make as many multiples of these sheets as you see your learner increase their ability to complete the activity.
Version 2 – full sheets for learners who are ready to take on the whole set!
Version 2A – full sheets with a drawing activity!
I just know that your learners will enjoy this activity, and most importantly… laugh and learn!
Activity includes 23 pages of hands-on learning and fun!
These activities are designed to be engaging and fun, so don’t forget to allow your learner to find their own creative ways to laugh and learn! Tag @laughing_and_learning and use #laughingandlearning on Instagram to share your fun experiences!
