Being and feeling productive is skill that everyone wishes to increase. But we don’t realize how closely linked our brain heath is to our overall productivity. Here are 4 brain rules that will help you to increase your productivity in your life and career.
Rule 1: Exercise 2 – 3 Times a Week
- Exercise boosts brain power and improves the amount of energy and oxygen which reaches the brain. The more energy and oxygen the brain receives, the better it works!
Rule 2: Stay on Task
- Multitasking = More Errors – you can make 3x more errors on tasks when interrupted.
- Multitasking = More Time – it takes 4x longer to complete a task when interrupted.
- Multitasking is the enemy of productivity. The more productive you want to become, the more you must remain on the specific task at hand.
Rule 3: Frequently Review and Repeat Tasks
- Repeat to remember! Your brain can hold about 7 pieces of information for 30 seconds. Repeat it, or it disappears.
- If you want to increase your productivity, or develop a specific habit, start by implementing small portions of the task little by little, and repeat! Over time the skills you are implementing will compound, because the more something is repeated, the more likely it is to remain.
- Reviewing tasks is just as important. To ensure you are being productive rather than busy, review your tasks so that you know you are still on the right track. If not, then pivot and make a new plan.
Rule 4: Sleep 8 Hours a Night
- Sleep Well, Think Well!
- Sleep must be important because we spend 1/3 of our lives doing it! Loss of sleep is detrimental to our overall productivity and brain health. Lack of sleep hurts:
- Attention
- Executive function – the ability to manage yourself and get stuff done.
- Working memory
- Mood
- Logical reasoning, and
- Motor dexterity
- Not everyone can get 8 hours of sleep per night. But the point is to try to get as much sleep as possible to increase your brain health so you can increase your overall productivity.
Final Thoughts
Being productive is far more important than simply being busy. A healthy brain allows us to approach tasks in the most efficient way possible. Start implementing these 4 brain rules today, and you will soon see an increase in your overall productivity in your life and career.
